The Red Sky Ride team are about to start their epic 1000 km, 8 day ride across the Great South West. These amazing individuals will not only be pushing themselves to their personal limit, but are making a major difference to Western Australians with cancer. Supported by a fantastic team of volunteers and local heroes, the Red Sky Riders are aiming to raise $400 000.00.
The 2017 Red Sky Ride Ambassador Ryan Doran’s cancer journey started when he was 21 and preparing for what was supposed to be a brilliant year. However within weeks of his birthday, he found out this was not going be the case. Ryan was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the following 6 to 9 months. This was a shock and a challenge and at times he sat asking himself ‘Why this was happening to me and what had I done to deserve this’. Throughout his journey, Ryan explains that he would make a joke and have a laugh, do what needed to be done and he got through it. He thinks this may seem like an odd way to take on a
challenge, but for Ryan this made things easy. It might be hard to understand how he came to such positives from such a terrible situation but Ryan honestly believes he would not be where he is today without that experience. He explained to everyone present at the recent SolarisCare Gala Dinner ‘In my opinion if you’re able to focus on what needs to be achieved while still enjoying yourself you can overcome even the most difficult situation.’
The riders are cycling to help people like Ryan and we wish them the best of luck. Their welcome home event on Saturday March 4 will be a morning to remember.
The SolarisCare Foundation is a community based, not for profit, cancer care organisation and the centres offer information, education, support and complementary therapies to cancer patients and their carers. All the therapies are evidenced based and have shown to reduce symptoms such as pain, nausea, loss of appetite, depression and anxiety. Support is provided free of charge and this year we will have more than provide over 16,500 services through our centres.
