Join us for a panel discussion that promises to be enlightening.

From the shock of diagnosis, through the ensuing rollercoaster of treatment decisions, attending appointments, communicating with your friends and family, and all the rest of life’s challenges, it’s not surprising that many people complain about the emotional impact of cancer.

Our panel of experts include a psychologist, a psychotherapist, a counsellor, and a supportive care researcher and they will cover topics such as fear and uncertainty, communication and relationships, listening to the wisdom within, and their ideas on empowering skills such as mindfulness.

There’s time for questions and discussion too.

Featured experts include Karen Anderson, Moira O’Connor, Kirsty Wood and Satyam Brown.

This is  free event promoted by Solaris Cancer Care, Breast Cancer Care WA and melanomaWA

Look Good Feel Better is dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance- related side-effects caused by cancer treatment. Women, men and teens participate in a practical workshop which covers skincare, make-up and headwear demonstrations, leaving them empowered and ready to face their cancer diagnosis with confidence.

The workshops include sessions on skincare techniques to alleviate symptoms including dryness and sallowness; makeup tips to help patients deal with concealing redness and drawing on
eyebrows; and advice on headwear including scarf styling and wig selection.

Each participant receives a Confidence Kit, full of skincare and make-up products donated by the cosmetic industry to use as tools for application throughout the workshop and to continue in their own homes.

Participants also benefit from the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation. Through the workshops friendships and additional support networks are formed that can help during their diagnosis and treatment.

In this workshop we will be exploring different forms of mindful movement - yoga, spinal movements and dance. Through this exploration of movement and the body, we can begin to deepen our understanding of ourselves. We become aware of tensions we hold in the body, linear movement patterns and movements we feel most comfortable and uncomfortable with. When we start to move mindfully and bring our awareness to the present moment, we also begin to become more aware of the patterns in our mind. We can begin to see the mind-body connection.

Join experienced facilitator Cathy Brown to explore the nine areas of life cancer thrivers may have in common. Built on lived experiences, this interactive program brings to life your unique experience making informed choices to support your wellbeing.
This course is hopeful and opens up discussions on a variety of topics relevant to people facing health issues. As her PhD thesis Kelly Turner examined outliers- people who outlived their prognosis, and analysed the key themes they had in common. While we are careful to avoid false hope, many people diagnosed with cancer find that reading the stories of these cancer thrivers is very helpful.
The nine areas discussed, with room for debate, sharing and dissension, include:
1. Changing your diet – if so, why, and who to consult
2. Taking control of your health – how to source reliable information and make informed decisions
3. Following your intuition – first de-stress, then tune in
4. Using herbs and supplements – is there any evidence? Can this cause harm?
5. Keeping the lines of communication open
6. Managing emotions; increasing positive experiences
7. Embracing social support
8. Deepening your spiritual connection
9. Checking with values and reasons for living well

Benefits & Outcomes

  • An understanding of the nine key principles that people who thrive have in common.

  • Deeper understanding of the choices people make, and what possible life paths have been trod by others.

  • Sharing resources and ideas in a facilitated, inclusive forum.

“Our health—and indeed our entire lives—can be seen as the sum of all our moment-to-moment decisions. This includes how we choose to eat and drink, think and feel, act and react, and move and rest on any given day.”
Dr Kelly A. Turner, Ph.D.

Story-telling existed before the invention of paper, and is common
to all cultures and societies. Stories help to explain our origins and
give voice to our memories, fears and desires. They can imagine
possible futures. Whatever your motive for wishing to write, this
three-hour workshop will help you find a language and a structureto express the story, or stories, you wish to tell. All you need to
bring is pen and paper, and a willingness to try something new.

So good we are running it twice! The workshop content will be much the same, but the stories you choose to tell might change, so feel welcome to attend one or both workshops.
