Meditation is a simple and easy practice to bring about a relaxed body and calm mind. Meditation techniques include slow breathing and muscle-relaxing exercises to physically and mentally relax the body. There is evidencebased research that shows that meditation can improve wellbeing when practised on a regular basis. Meditation generally involves focusing attention on the senses of the body, or the breath which then allows thoughts to recede. When meditating, the mind becomes calmer, clearer and physical relaxation occurs. A goal of meditation is to reach a state of relaxed, mindful awareness. Mindfulness meditation means being aware and present in each moment. Patients who have tried meditation and mindfulness report benefits such as greater positivity, gaining control, finding different ways of coping and personal growth.
