The author Irvin Yalom describes thinking about death as akin to ‘staring at the sun’, something we naturally find uncomfortable and can’t look directly at. Social work researcher Brene Brown writes about stepping into what we fear, and ‘braving the wilderness’ within. Having a terminal diagnosis puts dying in the foreground and can be the start of new opportunities, conversations and ways of being together and alone.
