18 Jul Art Expression in Albany
By Valmai Nathan
Solaris Cancer Care Albany runs art sessions in a supported environment for groups who have experienced cancer. Art Expressions provides a safe place to express emotions and feelings around cancer through the creation of art. This can be anything from drawing and painting to the use of mandalas for colour expression and bead work.
The participants do not need to have any art skills but just need to bring with them a sense of playful inquiry. The sessions are often full of fun, laughter and tears.
Above is one of the pictures the art group have completed which hangs in the Zone 4 Cancer Reception at Albany Health Campus, Albany.
Expression through art allows the individual artist to explore their thoughts, feelings, conflicts and any issues causing anxiety. Expressionist art tries to convey emotion and meaning rather than reality. Each artist has their own unique way of “expressing” their emotions in their art. In order to express emotion, the subjects are often distorted or exaggerated.
The result can be both vibrantly colourful and shocking.
